Life -- Doing What You Love

In the past, I struggled with my career as a writer (as I'm positive all creators do at some point or another) simply because I wasn't sure if that's the path I've really been set to walk. Am I meant to be an author? Or is it something else along those lines? To be perfectly honest I'm still not certain that it's what I'm supposed to do with my life, but I'm no longer doubtful that what I'm doing is the right way. It hasn't even been a year since I started reading and writing every day, but since I have I've been able to really take myself seriously about being a writer. The funny thing is, it isn't a sudden increase in quality of work that inspired me. In fact I think some of my best stuff was written years ago in flashes of motivation I still haven't figured out how to summon.

The single most important thing I've learned since I've started this blog, is that it literally does not matter in the slightest what you do. The only thing that means anything is whether or not you enjoy yourself. We do a lot of different things in life. When we're in school we learn a lot about diverse subjects and we handle a lot of things in different ways. After we get our education most of us start job hopping and start learning what it's like to actually earn money. We learn about ourselves and what we enjoy, and slowly we start gravitating towards a lifelong career.

One big problem with this is that a lot of people, by necessity or otherwise, do things that they don't enjoy. I worked at Target for a while, and I absolutely hated that job. It's only saving grace was the fact that I was by myself a lot and could listen to audiobooks, but everything else about it made going to work day after day harder and harder. The only thing I really learned at that job is what I hate about customer service and working with people that don't appreciate you. I didn't learn anything about writing or what I really want to do with my life.

The thing is, I believe that if we all find something we enjoy, be it a hobby or a subject, and simply pursue it on our own time, we'll find our paths naturally. As of right now I cannot write fiction every single day, and I never have been. In that past that meant I didn't write very often, which meant I felt like a failure. But I've found a way to feel productive and enjoy myself doing it, so I know that what I'm doing with this blog will without a doubt guide my on my path towards being a writer.

So, all you have to do is find something you enjoy doing. Something worth doing. We can't all make a living watching sports or playing video games, but even some recreational things can become our livelihoods. If you like reading maybe you can become an editor. Maybe you can get into the sidelines of the sports industry, or professionally critique those games you play. The point is, just do something you love, and trust yourself to find a way to make money doing it.

    A Daily Dose of Derailment

Hey, my name is Kollin Cooley. Writer, improv actor and teacher, and college student.
If you've come in search of an interesting blog where you learn valuable things, you took a wrong turn somewhere. I'm impressed, considering you're on the internet where there are no turns.
But now that you're here, you may as well stay awhile and be disappointed with what you've found.
At least the only substantial amount of alliteration is in the title, so you won't have to worry about that.
