I play a lot of competitive games. I used to play League of Legends a lot (which is widely regarded as having the most 'toxic' community), but now that Overwatch has released I've been devoting a lot of my gaming time to that, especially when playing with friends. It's obvious that you're going to lose roughly half your games. There's no getting around that unless you hack. (Though I don't understand people that would. What do you gain?) Yet when one is losing people tend to look at those around them and push the blame on them. "I can't be the reason my team is losing. It has to be my awful teammates." This behavior is reinforced when that teammate dies or anything remotely negative happens.
If you're a gamer, you know this person. You may even be the person that yells at teammates when you start losing. While I do understand this behavior, I think that it's, frankly, stupid. I have had somebody that tried to convince me that you could not have fun playing a game if you were losing. To me that says this person has twice as much fun winning as normal people, in order to balance out his entertainment and thus justify the inevitable fifty percent loss rate.
Even outside of games, nothing good has ever come out of degrading those around you, regardless of what is happening. Most likely it just makes everybody mad, for one reason or another. In fact, pointing fingers and raging will only make me less likely to want you happy. When somebody puts me down for my lack of ability playing a character, it actually reinforces my desire to play them. When a teammate yells at me, it actually makes me want to win less. No, I wouldn't try to lose, but it makes me less upset at the prospect of it. (As a side note, I actually get enjoyment out of poking fun at this sort of person. It's one way to make the loss and blame easier to handle.)
This sort of turned into a rant, but that's not the point. What I'm trying to say is that you should try to make light of bad situations. If you find you get into arguments often, maybe you should look at yourself and try to realize that it doesn't help. If you're always around that person, don't antagonize people. Try to make them realize that nothing good would come of it, and find a compromise if there is one that can be made. Working together is often the only thing that will make things any better. In video games, if somebody is playing poorly, point out what they're doing wrong instead of telling them how bad they are. They usually know how bad they are, Captain Obvious.
